History
Founded 27 centuries ago, Megara Hyblaea is one of oldest the Greek colonies of Sicily. It was destroyed by its rival Syracuse, raised of its ruins, then taken again by the Romans with Syracuse at the time of the Second Punic War. There remains an archeological site about it, testimony of the organization of a Greek colony of the antiquated time (VIIe front century J.C.)See also: Megara Hyblaea
It is on the ruins of one of its suburbs, Xiphonia, that in 1232 the strengthened port of Augusta is founded, by Frederic II (king de Sicile in 1197, king of the Romans in 1212, emperor of the Saint Empire Romain Germanique in 1220). The latter could be maintained in Sicily thanks to the support of the pope Innocent III until the Bataille of Bouvines does of him the Master of Germany. It was an original personality, defender of arts and letters. Disciple of Averroes, it will leave in Sicily and his cities the print of his work and his taste for art and Arab philosophy.
Nowadays, this animated past left several military buildings, largely modified with the wire of the destruction generated by the various conflicts but also by the earthquake of 1693.
The castle dates from the foundation of the city, the town hall of the XVIIe century and the DUOMO of 18th.
The city formerly animated by its naval base saw today heavy industries (cement factories, refineries, chemistry).
