August Šenoa
August Šenoa (November 14th 1838, December 13rd 1881) was a Croatian author, critical, editor, poête and playwright.
He is with the articulation of the Croatian literature between the Romantisme and the literary realism. It is him which introduced the historical novel into the Croatian literature. Author of more than one ten works, it wrote in particular:
- Zlatarovo zlato (the gold of the goldsmith)
- Seljačka buna (the revolt of the peasants)
- Diogenes
- Čuvaj senjske ruke (pirates of Senj)
He also wrote the popular song and patriotic Živila Hrvatska .
Biography
He is born with Zagreb, then located in the Empire of Austria, in a family of Czech and German origin. Its name was then Schönoa but it will slavisera it thereafter in Šenoa. After studies of right to the University Charles of Prague, it settles with Vienna then finally goes back to Zagreb in 1866. It publishes there of 1874 to 1881 the literary journal Vijenac . He dies in Vienna at 43 years.
Work
In its writings it often mixes the romantic Nationalisme of the end of the 19th century with a realistic painting of the rise of the lower middle class.
