Augst

Augst is a Commune Switzerland located in the Canton of Basle-Countryside and in the District of Liestal.

History

Village located close to the mouth of the Ergolz in the the Rhine, Augst ( Augusta of its Latin name) developed around a Pont with toll. Into 1442, the commune is divided between Kaiseraugst, which depends on the seigniories Austrian of Rheinfelden before joined Canton of Argovie and Baselaugst or more simply Augst which depends on the seigniory of Farnsburg and which joined the Canton of Basle in 1461.

Mainly based on agriculture, the economy of the area also benefits from the development of the traffic of the goods and the people at the 19th century as well as creation, in 1912 on the the Rhine, of the Powerplant of Augst-Wyhlen.

Monuments

Halfway between Augst and Kaiseraugst the Roman site of Augusta Raurica is which present enter others an ancient theater, a thermal amphitheater, temple, forum and baths.
