Audrieu

Audrieu is a Commune Frenchwoman, located in the department of the Calvados and the area Basse-Normandie.

Its inhabitants are named the Aldériens .

Geography

Audrieu is located at ten kilometers in the south-east of Bayeux and eighteen kilometers in the west of Caen.

History

The village of Audrieu goes back to the Antiquité , where it bore the name of Alderium. Traces of Gallo-Roman dwellings and a feudal mound were noted there. The first lord of the place was Percy, cook of William the Conqueror which gave stock to the dukes of Northumberland. Audrieu returned in 1593 to Guillaume de Séran who married Marguerite de Percy whose seigniory was set up in baronnie in 1615.

Put on sale at the Revolution, the castle turned over to the Flax comb to the Restoration and is still between the hands of their descendants. During the Second world war, Gerhard Bremer, ordering 12th battalion of recognition of the German armed , established its general headquarter there. June 8th, in the clearings, the forests and the orchards bordering the castle, 24 members of the 3 {{E}} Canadian division were carried out: 22 of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and two of the Queen' S Own Rifles off Canada. Two British soldiers were killed at the same time. The castle shelters a hotel with restaurant of luxury today.

  • Church Notre Dame d' Audrieu of altered at the 19th century. Founded by the abbey of the Trinity of Vendôme which had in the vicinity a priory-cure, the church depended moreover on the baron d' Audrieu (perhaps by retrocession of the priory of Saint Nicolas of Chesnaye to whom this right belonged to the 14th century).

  • the mill of Taillebosq, on Only, was transformed into dairy in 1926.

The castle of Audrieu, frame at the 18th century is composed of a main building finished by two projecting houses with a surmounted central fore-part of a triangular pediment. The castle of the mound is older with its Saint-Louis vault dating from the 13th century.
