It had the honor with Halévy to inspire Richard Wagner (this last made the formal consent of it) and to cause its emulation when it wrote Rienzi .

Parisian stubborn “ not having never had time ” to walk out of the capital, epicurean, melody and spiritual, it gallant than was more impassioned, elegant and kept, in extreme old age, a fine intelligence and a pleasant liveliness. He was an invariably happy musician, loved, promoted by his contemporaries, because of his successes, with the rank of large Master. To its undeniable qualities, he added a humor which returned it still more sympathetic nerve. Did not have it habit to say: “ If I attended one of my works, I would not write of my life a note of music ”?

Biography

The grandfather of Auber was painter of the King under Louis XVI and his/her father, “officer of huntings of the King”, was at the same time painter and large music lover and, after the Révolution, opened a store of Estampe S. Destiné for the trade, the young man was sent in England in 1802, to learn English there. But the resumption of the hostilities brought back it to France, provided with famous British phlegm, this care to dissimulate the effort to let see only the gentleman, who will characterize it all his life whereas for the music, one could not be French than him.

It began its career as a dilettante, his father who has been able to rectify his fortune, compromised by its functions near the king, by being made editor and by opening a very prosperous cabinet of prints. During years, it composed at ease of the Chamber music, small a Op3era Comique, Error the one moment , played by a company of amateurs in Paris, and even for the prince of Chimay (Belgium) an Op3era Comique in three acts, Jean of Couvin . Enhardi by this success and profiting from the protection of Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, it put in music its first opera, the military Stay , played with the Op3era Comique in 1813 and which did not have that a success of regard, just like a second test, six years later, the Will and love letters (1819).

But on these entrefaites, the father of Auber died ruined and his/her son, of dilettante who it was, distracting himself with pasticher Mozart, had from now on to live or try to live of his music.

In 1820, with the Shepherdess lady of the manor , Auber was released from the conventional banalities, to develop an individuality, new cuts, original melodies. Consequently, it composed an opera per annum. This always happy musician had good fortune to meet the most important librettist of the century in the person of Eugene Scribe, author of the very famous booklets of operas. They got along with wonder and were complementary perfectly.

Of 1828 with 1882, the part occupied the poster for a total of 505 representations. One evening in Brussels, the duet Amour crowned of the fatherland was applauded excess; at the exit of the theater were formed ignited assemblies, then one went to the newspaper the National , then with the Law courts. Thus, the Dumb woman gave truly the signal of the revolution brabançonne following which the Belgium took its independence while separating from the Holland (June 1830). On the historical level, this work provided the foundations of the French grand opera, this kind which illustrate Robert the Devil of Giacomo Meyerbeer and Guillaume Tell of Gioacchino Rossini.

In a score of years of collaboration with Scribe, without equal building interesting and pleasant booklets, Auber gave several light operas which are masterpieces, like FRA Diavolo or the Hotel trade of Terracine (1830), the black Domino (1837), Diamonds of the crown (1841), the Share of the Devil (1843), Haydée or the Secrecy (1847), God and Bayadère (1830), Gustave III or the Ball masked , opera historical in 5 acts ( 1833) on a booklet which was also put in music by Giuseppe Verdi in a ballo in will maschera (1859). the Horse of bronze , opera fairyhood in 3 acts is transformed into opera in 1857. The last Op3era Comique, Rêve of love (3 acts on a booklet of Ennery and Cormon) is represented only 27 times.

Auber became member of the Académie of the Art schools under Charles X in 1829, director in the concerts of the court under Louis-Philippe ten years later, director of the imperial vault in 1852 and Grand Officer of the Légion of honor in 1861.

However, the title which was due to him more in heart was that of director of the Conservatoire; in 1842, it succeeded its Master Cherubini and occupied these functions until its death in 1871. Its burial is located in the 4th division of the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise at Paris.
