Manufacture of the invaluable objects of the gods
The manufacture of the invaluable objects of the gods of the Scandinavian Mythologie is told by Snorri Sturluson in its Edda ( Skaldskaparmal , 35), to explain why gold is indicated by the Kenning “hair of Sif” ( haddr Sifjar ).
Loki having, by joke, half-compartment the hair of Sif, the woman of Thor, this last was on the point of killing it. But Loki was committed making manufacture by the Alfes blacks golden hair which would push like truths.
It thus went to dwarf S, the wire of Ivaldi, which manufactured hair as well as the boat Skidbladnir and Odin launches it, Gungnir.
Loki then bet its head with the dwarf Brokk that his/her brother Eitri would be unable to produce objects of as good quality as these.
The bet was accepted and Eitri placed a pigskin in its forging mill, requiring of Brokk to actuate the bellows without stopping. Although a fly has it piqué with the hand, Brokk reached that point and Eitri left the furnace a wild boar whose silks were out of gold. In the Gylfaginning (48) and the Skaldskaparmal (7), Snorri names this wild boar Gullinbursti or Slidrugtanni.
Eitri placed then gold in the forging mill. Brokk again succeeds in actuating the bellows without interruption, although the fly has it piqué with the neck twice more extremely, and it was the ring Draupnir which was manufactured.
Eitri placed finally iron in the forging mill. This time, the fly pricked Brokk with the eyelid. Blood ran in its eyes, and the dwarf could not prevent himself from making a gesture to drive out the insect. Eitri withdrew then furnace a hammer, Mjöllnir.
Loki and Brokk brought the objects to Ásgard, so that Odin, Thor and Freyr can designate the winner of the bet. De Loki, Odin accepted Gungnir, a lance which never stopped during its jet, Thor had gold hair, which pushed like truths hair, and Freyr, Skidbladnir, a boat which had always good wind and could be folded up to be arranged in a pocket.
Brokk gave then the objects manufactured by his/her brother: in Odin, the ring whose every nine nights eight rings of the same weight dripped; in Freyr the wild boar, able to run in the air and on water more quickly than any horse, and illuminant the major darkness thanks to its gold silks; in Thor a indestructible hammer, always reaching its target and returning inevitably in the hand of that which launched it, but with a little short handle.
The gods judged that the hammer was the best of these objects, because it could protect them from the giant and that, consequently, Brokk had gained its bet. Loki initially proposed to the dwarf to repurchase his head then, in front of its refusal, tried to escape, but it was caught up with by Thor. Loki put forward then that it was its head and not its neck which he had bet, and which the dwarf could not thus cut to him. Brokk went to this argument and was satisfied to sew the lips of Loki with a named thin strap Vartari.
