Atropatès
Atropatès (in Greek Aτρoπάτης; in Old man-Persan Atarepata ), called Atrapes by Diodore, was a general of the empire of the Achéménides, apparently Mède, which had the command of Mèdes, Cadusiens, the Albaniens of the Caucasus and Saces to the Bataille of Gaugamèles (-331), in the name of Darius {{III}}, but which then joined with Alexandre Large the.
After the death of Darius {{III}}, it is made satrap north of the Médie, by Alexandre Large the with the support of his son-in-law Perdiccas married to his daughter for the weddings of Suse in -324.
This Satrapie consequently will name Médie atropatene and corresponds roughly to the current Azerbaïdjan and the north of the Iran. It keeps its satrapie after the death of the king and the division of Babylon (-323) and founds a dynasty in the northern part of the Iran, called according to its name Atropatène, which, benefitting from the Guerres of diadoques the is made practically independent. This kingdom continues to exist until the time of Strabon.
