Atouguia da Baleia
Atouguia da Baleia is a Village Portuguese of the commune of Peniche, with 46,04 km ² of surface and 7.988 inhabitants (2001). Its population density is of 173,5 hab/km ².
Geography and Demography
The Village of Atouguia da Baleia comprises approximately 2000 inhabitants.Other important cores of population are: Bufarda, Geraldes, Ribafria, Sâo Bernardino, Reinaldes and Lugar da Estada. In particular, Consolation is a local tourist core.
The village of Atouguia da Baleia has like borders: north the parish of Ajuda, Ferrel, Tightened of El-Rei, the south the commune of Lourinhã and in the west the Atlantic Ocean
The relief is characteristic of the area of the Extrémadoure while being relatively clearly close to the sea and partly finale to the river to São Domingos, and with mountainous small formations which do not exceed the 100 meters height in the interior zone where the Plate of Cesaredas is initiated. A point of interest is the valley of the river Saint Domingos, with the length of which since 1996 a stopping exists bearing the same name.
In the north of the edge of the Consolation, the maritime coast forms a sandy bay until Peniche. In the south of the Consolation the east coast consisted landed with approximately 10 to 30 m height by having sometimes small sand beaches (such as for example: Saint Bernardino and Oporto Large).
History
With the the Middle Ages, this Village was a rather active port of Mer, but it lost its with the profit of the Ville Peniche, the current seat of the commune.Historical summary:
- • D. Alphonse Henriques grants to the colonists French Guillerme and Roberto de Corni the ground of Tauria in recognition of the assistance lent in the conquest of Lisbon to the Moors;
- • The charter of Tauria created in 1167 was renewed in 1218 and after 1510;
- • In 1373, during the reign of D. Fernando, general cuts in the village of Atouguia were built;
- • In 1448, D. Afonso V grants to D. Álvaro Gonçalves de Ataíde, for its good services lent to the kingdom, the place of Count d' Atouguia;
- • Barge was high with the statute village in 1609 by D. Filipe III and the common one was created in 1610;
- • November 6th, 1836, by proposal of the Minister Manual Passos and decree of Queen D. Maria II, is extinct the commune of Atouguia da Baleia while being their parishes (Atouguia da Baleia and Serra of El-Rei) built-in the commune of Barge.
Economy
The economic main activities of the Village are the Agriculture and the agro-industrial sector, civil construction and the services. A significant part of the population also is related to the fishing in the port of Peniche.
