Athos , from its true name Armand de Sillègue d' Athos d' Autevielle , was born in 1615 in Béarn and died the December 21st 1643. It inspired with Alexandre Dumas the fictitious character of Athos , in the novel the Three Musketeers .

Biography

Athos holds its name of the small borough of Athos-Aspis on the Gave d' Oloron, close to Sauveterre-with-Béarn and to Autevielle. Junior by family, which could make, since to its elder would return the Seigneurie S of Athos and Autevielle, if not enter the army or the orders? He was cousin six times removed of Mister de Tréville, whose protection enabled him to enter the regiment of the Mousquetaires in 1640, at the same time as Porthos. One knows only him that he was inhabitant of Béarn, related to Mr. de Tréville by the family of his mother and that he disappeared young person, undoubtedly killed during a duel. But in the novel of Alexandre Dumas the Viscount of Bragelonne, which occurs in 1661, one speaks about Athos, as well as Porthos and of Aramis. Would Dumas have made an anachronism, or Athos he actually died after 1661?

Character of Novel

Just as D' Artagnan, there does not exist one but three Athos: the historical character, the character of Courtilz, and that of Dumas.

Athos was not brother of Porthos and Aramis as affirms it Courtilz but only their very remote cousin.

Of this character without thickness, Dumas made a man of a famous birth (the count of Fère): it gives him the aïeux glorious ones, grounds in the Berry, a castle, a past full with secrecies. Dumas makes elder Musketeers of them; it is thus thirty years old at the beginning of novel, of Artagnan very right eighteen and Aramis between twenty-two and twenty-three. It makes it die in 1673, that is to say about thirty years after the real date of its disappearance.

Alexandre Dumas gives to Athos a son, Raoul, Vicomte of Bragelonne .
