Atholl
The Atholl or the Athole (Gaelic of Scotland Athall , in the past Athfhotla ) is a vast historical district of the Highlands of Scotland. Today it composes the northern part of the Perth and Kinross, bordering the boroughs of Marr, Badenoch, Breadalbane, Strathearn, Perth and Lochaber.
Atholl is historically regarded as a mormaerdom, later like a county. The first Duc of Atholl was Matad at the 12th century. In 1703, Atholl became the name of a title of duke by the will of the queen Anne. The title counts also several subsidiary titles, like marquis d' Atholl (created in 1676), marquis de Tullibardine (1703), count d' Atholl (1629), count de Tullibardine (1606 and 1676), count de Strathtay and Strathardle (1703), Viscount of Balquhidder (1676), Lord Murray de Tullibardine (1604), Lord Murray, Balvenie and Gask (1676) and Baron Percy (1722). The baronnie of Percy belongs to the Pairie of Great Britain; all the other titles belong to the peerage of Scotland.
In Gaelic of Scotland, the name Atholl is Athall , which derives from Athfhotla , “another (or " a seconde") Fotla”, Fotla indicating the Ireland in a traditional way.
Among the cities and the villages of Atholl, one counts Aberfeldy, Ballinluig, Blair Atholl, Dunkeld, Logierait, Pitlochry and Weem.
