Athlon 64
The Athlon 64 is a Microprocesseur launched in September 2003 by AMD and based on architecture K8 (like the Sempron s754, the Sempron 64, Athlon FX, Athlon X2 and Opteron).
Compared to the K7 here improvements:
-
integration of the Controller report
- integration of the input-output controller HyperTransport (HTT)
- pipeline extended on 12 floors (against 10 for K7) to allow the rise in frequency
- the management of the mask L2 was improved
- extension of the instruction sets X86 (named X86-64) associated with a doubling of the number of registers in mode 64 bits. Intel will begin again such as they are these extensions by re-electing them EM64T in the Pentium 4 prescott.
- addition of a function of protection against the viruses and trojans, NX bit (begun again by Intel and famous XD bit)
- engraving ONESELF: Silicon One Insulator, a method which makes it possible to reduce the thermal dissipation of the CPU
The mode 64 bits requires a specific Operating system (Windows XP 64, Linux x86_64…), and of the compatible applications. It was launched fine 2003 on socket 754 (management of the memory simple channel) before spending one year later to the socket 939 (management of the memory doubles channel).
- the version Dual core of Athlon 64 is named Athlon X2 (available on socket 939).
- June 2006 AMD launches its platform AM2 , an increase in the number of pines with 940 and the support of DDR2 (800).
- AMD declines all its range 939 on AM2 by adding a FX-62, a CPU Windsor Dual Core with 2 * 1024 Kio of L2 mask to 2800 MHz.
