Athletic force

The Athletic Force , or Powerlifting in English, is a sport of force. It consists like the Haltérophilie with raising bars, but it is characterized some by its movements technically basic, where the loads are heavier and where the amplitude is more reduced. This sport is called Dynamophilie in Quebec.

History

The athletic force diverged only recently from the haltérophilie. Raised ground is an old movement, but the inflection on legs dates only from the years 1930 and the Développé lying from the post-war period. Little by little competitions appeared in the United States, but the first official international competitions date from the beginning of the year 1970. In same time the haltérophilie concentrated on the two Olympic movements (snatch and shoulder-jeté), and the two sports are from now on distinct. The athletic force depends besides on another federation: IPF and WDFPF (World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation).

Movements

  • Inflection on legs , or Squat in English. This movement consists in going down in position squatted (until the thighs are horizontal) and being raised, a bar resting on the back of the shoulders.
  • Developed lying , or Bench close English . The athlete is in reclining position. He holds the bar, arms tended above the chest, brings it in contact with the chest and raises. (after an installation of 1 seconds)
  • Raised ground , or Deadlift in English. The athlete seizes the bar on the ground and raises it until it is completely upright, the bar remaining on the level of the hips.

Course of the competitions

As in haltérophilie, the competitions begin with the weighing from the athletes. The athletes are classified by category of weight per age and sex. Each one has three tests for the three movements. One adds then the best test with each movement and the athlete carrying out the best total carries it in his category. In the event of equality it is the lightest athlete who gains except if the athètes weigh the same weight one 2nd weighing is thus made in order to determine gaining it (E).

Equipment

Steel bars of 20 kg are used, as in haltérophilie, the only notable difference being a higher rigidity in order to support very heavy loads without excessive inflection. The discs also follow the same code of color (10 kg: green, 15 kg: yellow, 20 kg: blue, 25 kg: red).

The equipment of the athlete is on the other hand very specific: elastic and very rigid shirts maintain the athlete, avoid the wounds and improve the performances. In the same way, the knees of the athlete are maintained with very tight elastic bands for the inflection of legs. Finally the port of a leather belt ensures the maintenance of the back and the lumbar zone.
