Athis-Mons

Athis-Mons is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France.

Its inhabitants is called Athégiens.

Geography

  • Athis-Mons is located at the north of the department, with the confluence of the Orge and the the Seine, and in southern edge of the international airport of Orly. It belongs to the Paris and its suburbs and is member of the Communauté of communes of the Doors of the Essonne
  • Communes bordering: Paray-Old woman-Station, Savigny-sur-Orge, Juvisy-sur-Orge, Villeneuve-the-King, the Ablon-on-Seine, the Vigneux-on-Seine and Draveil.
  • the commune is served by the Gare of Athis-Mons on the line C of the RER, and must be disenclosed by 2011 by the Tramway Villejuif - Athis-Mons.
  • the city is today made up of 5 districts , each one being used as a basis at committees of participative democracy:

    • Center town

History

  • the site of Athis was the seat of 1140 to 1789 of a priory placed under the jurisdiction of the abbey Saint Victor of Paris. The current church Saint Denis (see below) goes up at that time.

  • the common one was formed in 1817 by the meeting of 2 villages, Athis on the slope of the Seine and Mons on the close plate. Nowadays the low district is commonly called Athis-Valley .
  • Athis-Mons forms part today, with Juvisy-sur-Orge and Paray-Old woman-Station, of the Communauté of communes of the Doors of the Essonne. This inter-commune public corporation is chaired by François Garcia, Maire of Athis-Mons.

Religious heritage

  • Athis-Valley: the Notre-Dame church of the Way (called in the past Our-Lady-of-Way-of-Iron), built in 1954 pennies plans of the architect Maurice Laurence. The building is decorated stained glasses of Maurice Rocher.
  • Village of Athis: the parish church Denis Saint, built by the canons of the abbey Victor Saint of Paris at the 12th century (about 1140). The place was besides the seat of a priory placed under the jurisdiction of this abbey until the Révolution.

    • Of the Romance building, there remains only the Romance bell-tower with pyramidal arrow, and the chorus, still decorated its vault and of its Romance capitals.
    • the church is deeply altered at the 17th century and 18th century. Whereas she undertakes various installations in her adjacent castle with the priory (today school Saint Charles), Madam de Charolais makes rebuild the nave in 1748, parallel to installation by the canons of side chapels in the north of the church (of which the vault seigneurale, in 1750-1753).
    • At the 19th century, the frontage is completely remade in neo-gothic style. The arrow of the bell-tower and the belfry are rebuilt into 1898-1900 pennies the direction of the historic buildings (building classified in 1840).
    • Of the buildings of the priory itself, there remains today a wing of building perpendicular to the church, and whose construction probably goes back to the 18th century. This building is the property of évêché, and it is today question of converting it into seminar for priests.
  • the school Saint Charles has it as a vault of great dimension, built at the same time as the buildings of the college in the years 1950. This one, dedicated to Saint-Charles, is built with the techniques specific to the reinforced concrete (arcs diaphragms covered by a skirting and a carpentry wooden, large decorated rectangular bays of stained glasses).

Civil inheritance

  • Museum of the air (near the Airport of Orly, open Wednesday and saturdays ). One can see there agrees it 002, a caravel, a mercury, like 2 fighters.

  • the common preserve also of other residences worthy of interest, but of many destruction were caused by the Second world war (intensive bombardments of the zone in 1944).
