Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment

Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment ( APEX ) is a submillimeter Radiotélescope of observation. This one is localized with the Chile, with an about sixty kilometers in the east of the town of San Pedro de Atacama, on the site of Llano de Chanjnator, a high plateau of the desert of Atacama (5100m) at the same place as the Interféromètre ALMA in the course of construction.
APEX
Ojectifs
APEX lies within the scope of the spectroscopic observation in order to study the various constituent objects our Univers. With its official unveiling on September 25th, 2005, this one works towards various ends:- the study of the young Universe by the use of submillimeter Waves
- the study of the galactic jets
- the study of the formation of the star S by the protostar detection always thanks to the same waves
- the study of the visible zone since the southern hemisphere with amongst other things the possibility of observing the galactic center, the Clouds of Magellan (the two galaxies closest to us) and Centaurus has (nearest Galaxie with active core)
- the location of various subjects of observations which will be studied more in detail by interferometer ALMA
Characteristics
The Radiotélescope submillimeter APEX is based on a prototype of antenna designed for interferometer ALMA. This one was modified in order to be able to function in autonomy. It measures 12m diameter and works in the field the wavelengths going from 0,2 to 1,5 millimetres. This instrument thus will allow the precise study of what one calls the cold universe. Indeed, the waves which it is able to detect are emitted by objects under conditions of temperature ranging between 10 and 100 Kelvins (- 263°C with -163°C). The APEX is the fruit of a collaboration between the Max-Planck-Institute für Radioastronomie (MPIfR), the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
