Astrological Sign

Western astrology as vedic astrology employ a Zodiaque which divides the ecliptic into twelve astrological signs of equal amplitudes. It should be stressed that this definition of the signs astrological (or astronomical) is independent of that of the constellations of the same name.

Astronomical definitions

That it is in Western astrology or Indian astrology, the signs are named according to the constellations which were closest at the time, there is close to 3  000  years, but this bond does not exist nowadays any more. On the other hand, for Chinese astrology, this forever existed bond.

Traditional Western astrology leaves the beginning of the Bélier, not defined by the intersection of the ecliptic (apparent way of the Sun on the vault of heaven during the year) and of the celestial equator. It is the point where the Sun passes to the vernal equinox.

The modern calendar being defined by the movement of the Ground around the Sun (“solar” calendar of the type), and the orbit of the Ground being appreciably circular, it is easy to determine in which sign the Sun passes a day given: its position is practically identical one year to the other, if one neglects the light variation due to the leap years. These are the dates which appear in the article devoteds to in the various signs.

Sidereal astrology, contrary to traditional astrology, is located compared to the constellations and with stars. For this form of astrology, it is necessary to take account of the effect of the Précession of the equinoxes, which makes derive the vernal Point from a degree all the 72  years (and thus, the calendar related to the one day old shifts appreciably stars all the 71  years). This progressive change led to a cycle of 25  000  years, at the conclusion which the constellations find their primitive place (with the own movement of stars near).

To determine the sign in which the the Moon is or a planet, it is necessary to resort to a éphéméride, or a computer program specialized in Astronomie. Such programs make it possible to calculate a Horoscope quickly, which makes it possible the astrologer to rather devote to the astrological Interprétation than to calculation.

Dates of the signs in the various systems

The table below compares the date of entry of the Sun in the signs, according to whether one places oneself in a tropical astrology (in the traditional tradition of Ptolémée) or in a sidereal astrology (of Indian type), as well as the dates of entry of the Sun in the constellations of the same name, according to the borders defined by the international astrological union (IAU) in 1930. These dates can deviate one day in more or less theoretical date, because of the cycle of the leap years, and the Précession of the Périhélie of the terrestrial orbit during the centuries.

The astrological dates (founded on the zodiac tropic) and the symbols are those generally used in occident. The use of sidereal dates for the signs is practiced only in India, and Indian astrology is founded on different signs.
