Astrid of Sweden
Astrid of Sweden , Astrid Sofia Lovisa Thyra of Sweden, was queen of the Belgian February 23rd 1934 until its tragic death in an car accident with Küssnacht (Swiss), the August 29th 1935. Born with Stockholm the November 17th 1905, girl of the prince Carl of Sweden, it married the November 10th 1926, Léopold of Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha, future king Léopold III.
From this union, were born:
- the princess Joséphine-Charlotte, X Jean large-duke of Luxembourg;
- the future king Baudouin Ier, X countess Fabiola de Mora there Aragón;
- the future king Albert II, X princess Paola Ruffo di Calabria.
Following the death of king Albert Ier the February 17th 1934, Léopold and Astrid become king and queen of the Belgians. Very elegant, the Astrid queen was close to the population, not hesitating to mix with crowd or to walk her children in street. She was very concerned problems of the underprivileged people and organized in 1935 with the royal palace a great collection of clothing and vivres. Adored of the Belgian people, his death the August 29th 1935 caused an immense emotion in Belgium. The Astrid queen became a myth…
