Astragale (architecture)
See also: Astragale
The astragale is a round Moulure, kind of ring or roll, separating the capital from the column. With the the Middle Ages, the astragale generally forms part of the capital (thus constituting its base) and is separated from the column by a joint. In the Antique art, it is the opposite: the astragale is always separated from the capital.
The astragale term comes from Latin astragalus who means “bone of the heel”, itself derived from the Greek astragalos , which means “vertebra”.
The astragale is a male name and one thus says “a astragale”
