Astounding Stories
Astounding Stories , created in 1930, is the American Magazine which gave its noble letters to the modern Science-fiction.
Description
It is, at the beginning, which is commonly called a magazine pulp . Its format paper will change during the Années 1970. In its beginnings, the magazine publishes fictionalized histories of science fiction, often without scientific bases.When John W. Campbell becomes the editor about it, its mission is modified: to publish stories which anticipate the scientific changes and technological. In 2005, this mission is always maintained.
Since its creation, its name changed on several occasions:
- 1930: Astounding Stories off Super-Science ;
- 1938: Astounding Science fiction ;
- 1960: Analog Science Fiction and Science Fact ;
- Today: Analog Science Fiction and Fact .
It is sometimes indicated by the abbreviation ASF , because the words Analog and Astounding begin letter consequently, just like the words Fiction and Fact .
Because of the feeble incomes of the industry in which it evolves/moves, ASF frequently publishes unknown authors of science fiction. Thus it launches the career of Orson Scott Card during the years 1970 and that of Harry Turtledove during the years 1980.
History
After eight years of publication under the control of two successive literary editors, John W. Campbell takes the reins in 1938 of them. It re-elects it Astounding Science-Fiction and insists that it is perceived like a magazine of science fiction only. It also requires that the writers anticipate the scientific changes and technological. More important still, it wishes to know how the human life is modified by it. This change imposes the review like the leader of the field.By afterwards, Campbell estimates that the title is too hooker. It decreases the size of the word Astounding and increases that of the words Science and Fiction . In 1960, it replaces Astounding by Analog . The logo undergoes also changes. The letter has remains the same one throughout the years, whereas the letters stounding decreases by size; idem for nalog .
After the abrupt death of Campbell in 1971, Ben Bova becomes the editor of the magazine, follow-up of Stanley Schmidt a few years later.
It is, since 1999, the property of Dell Magazines.
