Asterism (gemmology)

In Gemmologie, one calls asterism an effect of star or cross on certain fine and invaluable stones. The luminous lines forming the cross can be four, six, and seldom twelve. The asterism is due to the interference of the light with inclusions of the stone, for example the Rutile (titanium oxide) in corundums. The effect can be spectacular on the stones cut out of cabochon.
