Astereognosy

The astereognosy or stereoagnosy , of the Greek στερεός, stereophonies , (solid) and γιγνώσκω, gignosko (I recognize), is literally the fact of being able to recognize by the touch the shape and the volume of an object placed in the hand. It generally raises of an attack of the parietal cortex on the level of the primary somesthesic surface.

Stereognostic stereognosis, or “direction”, was described by Hoffmann in 1885. More than of a “direction”, it is about the association of various modes of elementary sensitivity, coming from the supericielle sensitivity and the major sensitivity.
