Astarac
The Astarac is a territory located in Gascogne, in the south of the Département of Gers and in the north of the Hautes-Pyrénées.
Presentation
- Situation : It divides its borders with the Armagnac in the North-West, the River-Low and the Bigorre in the west, the Magnoac (of the Four-Valleys) in south-east, the Savès in the east.

principal Cities : It gathers the towns of Mirande, Masseube, Miélan, Pavia, Idrac-Respaillès, Castelnau-Barbarens, Berdoues-Ponsampère, Mount-with Astarac, Miramont-with Astarac, Laas of Astarac, Fontrailles.

Etymology : Astarac , with the Middle Ages Asteriacum, Asteirac , is a priori, like its homonym Estirac, a Gallo-Roman domain name based on the local name Aster ( Uciando Aster, Dato Aster, Sancio Aster, Atton Aster is documented names of anybody, the three first in Bigorre, the fourth with Lézat-on-Lèze). The village of Asté close to Beaucens, is old a Aster . The linguist Joan Corominas brings this name closer to the word biscayen azterren “root, base”.
Geography
Skirting the plate of Lannemezan, Astarac is a very undulating country, with the clay soil, crossed by several rivers of which the Baïse and the Gers. The habitat is dispersed there. Mainly the breeding there is practiced.
History
The country house of Mirande, built in 1280, became the capital of the county of Astarac in 1297.
In 1307, the Count Bohémond d' Astarac held the castle of Renso , where the country house of Tournay in the Hautes-Pyrénées was built. It thus held a strategic node between the Bigorre and the Comté of Aure, on the river Arros vis-a-vis the castle of Mauvezin.
