The Assyrian of Syria are for the majority originating in Turkey and Iraq. They left their respective country during the era of the French Mandat in Syria.
In 1936, at the time of incidents in the country, the religious leaders and policies of the province of Djézireh asked for the French authorities a statute of autonomy for their province. As for the Sandjak d' Alexandrette, or the autonomous territory of the Alaouites, but the nationalist Arabic were opposed to that, denouncing the Balkanisation of Syria.
