Assynt log

The Loch Assynt is a lake located at 8 km in the east of Lochinver, not far from the north-western coast of the Scotland, in the Highlands ().

Geography

The Assynt log is surrounded by mountains, such Quinag, Canisp, Suilven, Culmor, Stac Pollaidh, Ben More Assynt.

Origin of the name

Assynt is the name of the parish in which this Log is located, in the west of the county of the Sutherland. The word Assynt would come from the Vieux norrois A-ssynt which would mean seen from afar and/or seen from Ass , i.e. considering by far ( Ass would mean as old man norrois rock ).

The Ardvreck castle

In the east of the log, one finds the ruins of Ardvreck Castle, castle built towards 1590/91 by the famous Clan MacLeod, which had this area since XIIIe century. Like many castles of the edges of logs, Ardvreck Castle is haunted.
