Association of the mayors of France

|} The Association of the mayors of France (MFA) gathers 35.577 mayors and presidents of communities, in exercise, in the communes of the departments and French territories, of metropolis and overseas, without any discrimination related on the size of the commune or the political party to which the mayor or the president belongs. Its representativeness makes an interlocutor impossible to circumvent of the public authorities of it.

History

Fruit of a compromise with the public authorities, the creation of the Association of the mayors of France in 1907, by Paul-Emile Sarradin, mayor of Nantes, also answers waitings of the latter, eager to have an interlocutor representative of the local authorities at the national level. Initially made up for and by the big cities, the Association of the mayors of France is extended gradually to the smallest communes.

In 1908, is constituted in parallel under the impulse of Jean-Baptiste Daure, mayor of Alan, the Association of the mayors of France and Algeria. The fusion of two associations will intervene in 1925, expressing the will of the mayors to be linked to make block vis-a-vis the public authorities in a pluralist dimension. At the end of the years 1920, the Association of the mayors of France became an interlocutor recognized by the whole of the public authorities.

The crisis of the years 1930 contributes to reinforce the role of the Association of the mayors of France as a force of proposals with respect to the public authorities. The mayors are made the spokesperson of increasingly social concerns then, role recognized by the public authorities and which is worth with the Association of the mayors of France to be recognized of Public utility in 1933.

At the time of the countryside for the presidential election of 2007, the Association of the mayors of France was moved by what one of the candidates, Gerard Schivardi, presented with the label of “candidate of the mayors” what could have made accept the voters that it was supported by all the mayors or, at least, by the majority of them. It could obtain, by decision of the courts, that Gerard Schivardi was constrained to change his slogan into being presented either like the “candidate mayors” but in the form of a “candidate of mayors”, i.e. certain mayors, namely those having brought their sponsorship to him.
