The Association for Computing Machinery (“association for the data-processing machinery”) or ACM is an international association based with the the United States whose objective is the development and the support for science and data-processing technology.

The ACM was founded in 1947, which makes of it the first organization dedicated to data processing. It publishes a great number of magazines and scientific newspapers, of which one, Communications off the ACM , was the body of reference in search and teaching for data processing (systems, languages and algorithmic) of 1960 to 1980. The programme of university education in four years proposed by this review in 1973 was adopted by the majority of the Western establishments of this time.

Another review, Computing surveys , established in an exhaustive way the state of the art in a different field specialized for each publication. Lastly, the ACM was used as focal point to constitute an important bank of free subroutines - mainly scientific -, initially in Algol, more tardily in FORTRAN, and finally in Langage C.

It organizes also technological and scientific conferences, of which it publishes account-returned. The ACM also has a large electronic library of publications in data processing.

The ACM also decrees a certain number of scientific and technological prices, of which most famous is the Prix Turing.

One can become member of the ACM while oneself being sponsored by two members.
