Association

Association is a French publisher of Cartoon, founded in May 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu, Lewis Trondheim, David B., Mattt Konture, Patrice Killoffer, Stanislas and Mokeït, which leaves shortly after.

It is the leader of the new current of cartoon of the years 1990 and still keeps the associative statute of its beginnings. She contributed to make known authors like Joann Sfar or Marjane Satrapi. She also published the work Comix 2000 .

Association created three reviews: Rabbit , oupus of the Oubapo , like the Test-tube , a review of criticism and theory of the cartoon. By taking support on the experiments more filling with enthusiasm previous decades (editions of the Public garden or Futuropolis, re-examined (TO BE FOLLOWED) and Charlie,…), refusing to confine itself with the fanzinat, Association knew to impose in a few years a manner of publishing of the cartoon who left the batch: authors with the capacity, original practices of distribution (abandoned under pressure of the Fnac), a black and demanding white (and not synonym of lack of money), very diverse formats: Lapinot and the carrots of Patagonie makes 500 pages and has dimensions of a novel, while the spidery scrawl make only a few centimetres, etc

A retrospective exposure of scale was devoted in 2000 to this editor at the time of the International festival of the cartoon of Angouleme.

In its test Plat bands (2005), Jean-Christophe Menu reconsiders these years of innovation and evokes its fears as for the future: the success of books such as Persépolis strongly impressed traditional editors who would seek according to him to occupy the crenel of the “independent” cartoon with insincere productions.

After the departure of David B. in spring 2005, Lewis Trondheim decides with autumn 2006 to leave Association, follow-up shortly after by Stanislas and Killoffer. In addition, Joann Sfar announces that it will not publish any more a book in the editor. The “editorial board” is then dissolves; since the origin it was composed of the founders of Association.
