The trade of nurse's aide belongs to the paramedical professions. Its activity is centered mainly on the assistance with the people looked after in the incapacity to only assume their elementary needs but also around the maintenance for the hospital hygiene.
Activity
Assistance-looking after works in close cooperation and under the responsibility of the Infirmière within the multi-field team revolving around the neat people. It contributes to the realization of some care, in particular the fundamental Soins in order to stage with the incapacity to carry out some acts of the daily life, like washing itself, to only get dressed or eat.

The Arrêté in France of July 22nd 1994 governs the function: it stipulates that “assistance-looking after them contribute to the total assumption of responsibility of the people in connection with the other speakers within a multi-field team, in hospital and extra-hospital medium and, as a need, with their education and that of their entourage”.Within this team, “assistance-looking after it contributes to the assumption of responsibility of a person or a group of people and takes part, within the framework of the clean role of the Infirmier (Décret in France n°93-345 of March 15th 1993 relating to the professional acts and the exercise of the occupation of nurse), in collaboration with him and under its responsibility, with care aiming meeting the needs for maintenance and continuity of the life of the' human being and at compensating partially or completely a lack or a reduction of Autonomie of the person. ”
Extracted the Decree n°93-345 of March 15th, 1993 relating to the professional acts and the exercise of the occupation of nurse in extra-hospital medium “when this care is exempted in an establishment or a service in residence, in medical matter, social or medico-social, the male nurse can, under his responsibility, to ensure them with the auxiliary collaboration of of child welfare or of assistance-looking after which it frames and within the limit of the competence recognized with the latter because of their formation. ”
The decree of October 22nd 2005 modified the professional diploma of assistance-looking after. It is composed between-other of a reference frame of formation, a reference frame of competence and a reference frame of activity defining thus more precisely the role of the ACE near the patient.
This decree makes it possible to present this diploma either within the framework of the validation of the assets of the experiment, or in initial training.
The decree n° 2007-1301 of August 31st, 2007, modifies name " professional diploma of soignant" assistance; in " diploma of state of soignant" assistance;.
Formation
In France
Only the holders of the professional diploma of assistance-looking after can exert this Métier. The Formation lasts 10 months including approximately 17 weeks of theoretical courses (in institute approved by the Ministère of health) and 24 weeks of Stage S.- Accès : to follow this 10 months formation, the candidates must succeed in the contest organized each year by the institutes. No diploma other than the Brevet of the colleges is necessary to present to the tests admissibility, the whole being to be old at least 17 years at December 31st of the year of the Examen. In the facts, the majority of the candidates arise with a level BEP (BEP medical and social careers; BEPA services with the people; CAPE early childhood…), even vat (Baccalaureat sciences and technologies of health and social the mainly). For the Continuing education, to count 2 or 3 years of experience professional.
- Examination : it comprises a writing and an oral examination, the passage of this last being subordinated to the success of the writing. The writing (2 hours) relates to the programme of Nutrition, food and biology of the BEP medical and social careers. The oral examination of admission (15/20 minutes) relates to a concerning topic ancillary medical or social field. The holders of the BEP mentioned above and the BEPA services to the people are exempted written test.

- 24 weeks of training courses (840 hours)
Teaching is given in the form of modules:
- Accompaniment of a person in the activities of the daily life
- the clinical state of a person
- the fundamental Care
- Ergonomics
- Relation/communication
- Hygiene of the hospital buildings
- Transmission of information
- Organization of work
Two put in professional situation are obligatory. A first with the module 1 and another modulates 3 of them (by an external jury).
