Assassins of the memory

the Assassins of the memory (the final edition of 2005 has as a subtitle: “a Eichmann of paper” and other tests on the Révisionnisme ) is a work of the French historian Pierre Vidal-Naquet.

Description

The book is composed of five articles several times altered written between June 1980 and June 1987. The title of the work was borrowed from an expression used by the Israeli historian Yosef Yerushalmi at the time of a conference in 1987 on the question of the lapse of memory.

In this series of articles, Vidal-Naquet leaves the ground of the history of the Antiquity to which it had been devoted up to that point to reflect on the problem arising from the Négationnisme (according to the term forged by the historian Henry Rousso). He wonders about certain authors such Robert Faurisson and Serge Thion which denies the reality of the genocide hitlérien and which, at the end of the Années 1970, had had an important echo in the media. Without seeking to discuss with the “revisionists” (as they indicate themselves), Vidal-Naquet tries to dismount the mechanisms of their thought and the Antisémitisme which is subjacent there. It describes its step like a “anatomy of the lie”, observing that the negationnism would have a double origin: the Extreme right-hand side (in particular néonazie, but also more largely - in particular in France with Maurice Bardèche) and the “far left” (in France with Paul Rassinier).
