Ass of Provence

The ass of Provence , known as Gray of Provence, is a race of ass originating in the south-east of the France: Dauphine Provence (departments of the Rhone delta, VAr, Vaucluse, Alp-of-High-Provence), , Savoy, the Cevennes.

It is an ass of average format (1,20 to 1,35 m with the garrot for the males, 1,17 to 1,30 for the females). The dress is clear, “gray turtle-dove”, and carries a black cross of Saint-Andrew on the back.

This race was associated a long time with the Transhumance of the Mouton S, carrying the material of the shepherds along the “drailles” driving with the mountain pastures of the the Cevennes or the the Alps. It was selected on a solid frame and members to traverse the more or less escarpées tracks of the mountains.

Rustic and patient animal, it is used today mainly like pet or tourism, for the transport of the luggage of the hikers.

The manpower of this race is very reduced, approximately 300 individuals listed in 1994. Association “Ass of Provence” works with its safeguard, in collaboration with the National stud farms. The race was recognized officially in 1995.
