Geography

History

Cité au: Esconiurn . The ground of Asquins belonged right from the start () to the abbey of Vézelay, which also exerted the spiritual power there. Was a long time one of the principal starting points for the great pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle. Sit and taken village by the members of a league, ordered by the duke of Nevers, in 1589. The Saint-Jacob church is classified with the World heritage UNESCO, within the framework of the Chemins of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle. ASQUINS, two thousand years of history.

In the north of Vézelay, the wooded calcareous plate is indented with the valley of Fontenottes. Important sources mark the outlet of this small valley on the Cure. Their presence justifies the establishment of a romanized Celtic village then whose traces were located at the end of the 19th century. The Roman way come from the Tool bags led to the level of the current bridge on fords and landing stages. A worship of water appears to have existed in margin of Roman collectings. The christianization of the site is related to Martin saint who founded (or dissolved) a vault while one of the sources took the name of Saint Martin's day source. At the same time, another site existed upstream of current Gué Paved, on an alluvial terrace. The village of Vergigny still appears in the constitutive instruments of Vézelay by Girart and Berthe. It seems to have suffered from the various invasions from the 9th century and definitively disappeared at the 11th century, perhaps shaved by the Champagne troops devastating the Auxerre-native grounds. A cemetery mérovingien located on the close slope was located at the beginning of the 17th century and was excavated about 1905. The climate of “Field of the Coffins” was a speaking index, testifying to the existence of these hundreds of burials in stone trunks, even out of sarcophagi.

In Asquins even, the worship of Martin saint was supplanted by that of Jacques saint on an unknown date, but extremely probably at the beginning of the 11th century century at the time of the foundation of the current church on the “moûtier”. This rock headland dominating the Cure draws its name from the monastic presence. Asquins is indeed then a direct dependence of Vézelay. Until the 16th century century, they were chaplains of the abbey who ensured the worship, while the temporal one was managed within the framework of the monastic “pal”. The communal oven left its name to a street; the barn with said is always noticed with the foot of the moûtier; the farm strengthened located between the Cure and Grand' street, was rebuilt at the 15th century on a network of old cellars and undergrounds. As for the seigneuriaux rights bitterly disputed at the time of the communal insurrections of Vézelay, they also applied to Asquins: right of press, cords to descend in cellar the barrels, “banality” of fishing in Cure…

The secularization of the abbey, the replacement of the monks by canons, in 1538, did not have to grain Asquinois. They benefitted from it to claim in François Ier the right to be closed, and the very young ramparts played their modest part in the events of 1569 and the seat put by the catholics under the walls of Vézelay. In same time the village saw péricliter the pilgrimages which had profited to him hitherto. Pilgrimage of co. Madeleine, repercussions of the large assemblies of cross behaviors on the site of Cordelle, but especially pilgrimage jacquaire. Asquins sheltered in its sanctuary the first stage of the way of Saint-Jacob. Dominated by the “montjoies” which were drawn up on the roads come from north and the east, the village saw passing the coquillards, since it had sheltered with the moûtier as chaplain, Aymery Picaud alias Olivier d' Asquins, author about 1140 of the Guide of the Pilgrim. Passage of the pilgrims remains, in addition to titulature of St Jacques for the church, a superb bust reliquary out of polychrome wood, perhaps ascribable to the 16th century.

Church, which occupied from the start the space which is currently reserved for him, was largely altered with the wire of the centuries and the conflicts from which it had to suffer: on XIe bases, the current building presents especially a nave in cradle broken of, a northern side arched in edges of, a southern side in quarter of round of XVIe. The bell-tower pressed in the beginning on the first span of the southern side, was returned in 1755 in the axis of the building, by preoccupation with a symmetry. The abbot Grognot, initiator of this last work campaign, was worried also interior decoration, making pose woodworks, create a decoration painted in the chorus, and arrange the sacristies, not without sacrificing the frescos of, S which decorated these old vaults, inter alia wise and Virgin Virgins insane, a Saint-Sebastien, a miracle of St Éloi and various badly elucidated scenes.

Attached to their church Asquinois equipped it at the 19th century of stained glasses honouring their owner but also holy Vincent. Because Asquins, country of water, very early became country of vine. Noble fields and vines commoners divided the slopes so much on the Burgundian slope (the bridge of Asquins marked a long time the entry in the Duchy and was dominated by the Close-Duke) that on the Nevers-native and Auxerre-native slope. Remainders lithic testify to the influence of this vineyard: meurgers, meurriées, huts covered in dry stone corbelling.

The cherry trees supplemented the production between the 18th century and the years 1940. But joint with depopulation will phylloxera it after the war of 14, was right of these productions requiring a many labor. The fir plantations proliferated on the abandoned pieces. The bûcheronnage was besides also a strong point of the life asquinoise, while the women practiced under the morvandelle influence the nourriciat and the placement of the assisted children of the Seine.

The life of the river was not negligible: conveyance by water, probable as of the ancient, frequent time enters it; passage of the flood with lost logs, until 1923; also fish in water with varied and abundant fauna.

The craft industry was well represented in Asquins with a several tannery, water mill, and at least three tilery of which one provides to Purple-the-Duke the tiles necessary to the restoration of the Madeleine.

The village had a school as of the 17th century, in a dependence of the cure and the moûtier. With the school laws, it initially obtained a school of boys, also sheltering the town hall, with the bottom of Grand' street, old road of Vézelay in Tonnerre and Auxerre. Then, end, it were a school of girls vis-a-vis the old presbytery; it is the current town hall.

Grouped village, Asquins has few variations: Bouillère constitutes a suburb out the walls, around an old leper-house. With the Revolution, Vaudonjon chooses to bind to Montillot. In the middle of the 19th century Nanchèvres chooses to join the Holy Father. Remain Chaumots, in limit of the territory vézelien and the Old woman Borders, firm strengthened in the middle of wood, her neighbor the Young person Borders having perished in a fire about 1870. There finally on the way of Domecy-on-the-Vault, old road of Avallon, the vault of Dried, set up in 1742 per Nicolas Tapin, always remained is insulated in the middle of the vineyards, only visited by the processions coming to beseech the rain.

At the village even the roofs of lava completely disappeared, carrying the aspect grisâtre which Victor Petit deplored. The village gained color there, while many restorations emphasized the gilded stone extracted the local careers.
