The Aspromonte is a solid mass of the Calabria in Italy which culminates to 1956 m in Montalto. It is bordered in the east by the Ionian Mer, in the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea and in north by the river Petrace and of the torrents of Platì and Careri.

Geography

The most top is Montalto (1 956 m) of the soft shape consisted of rocks antiquated (Gneiss). Almost all the buttresses go down stiff towards the sea giving a narrow coastal strip. The development of Aspromonte in superimposed terraces is characteristic and are composed of four levels known as piani or campi . In the littoral zone, the Citrus fruits S, Vitis, olive-trees and the Horticulture prevail, with the lower part of 1.000 m, it exists wood of Chêne S and holm oaks, with the top of the pines and Fagus. To 1.311 m the ski station of Gambarie is attended by the tourists of Calabria and Sicily.

Characteristic

In the commune of San Luca, in a difficult to reach valley is the Sanctuaire of the Madonna di Polsi (hamlet of Polsi), place of worship particularly attended the summer.

History

In 1862, following the Roman question where it seemed that the Italian government wanted to make low profile following the agreement with Napoleon III, Garibaldi tried to arrive at Rome with 3.000 volunteers. But the solved reaction of French obliged Urbano Rattazzi to intervene and send Enrico Cialdini to stop Garibaldi. The engagements took place with few kilometers of Gambarie on August 29th 1862, during which Garibaldi was wounded and captive fact like its partisans (Journée of Aspromonte) and some were shot. After its cure, Garibaldi was authorized to turn over in its residence of Caprera. In the locality of the commune of Sant' Eufemia d' Aspromonte where the hero was wounded, one finds a mausoleum with his bust and of the commemorative plaques in its honor and it is indicated the tree where it would have rested, wounded. At the museum of Vittoriano in Rome, the bored boot and the ball are preserved.
