Aspen

Aspen is a ski station of the Colorado, in the Rocky Mountains in the west of the the United States. The name comes from the abundance of the Tremble S (in English: aspen trees ) in the area. Aspen was initially a center of exploitation of the money mines where was extracted at the XIXe century a block from money from 2 tons.

Aspen is the chief town of the county of Pitkin and is on the Roaring Fork River, an affluent of the Colorado. The station is surrounded by Red Mountain in north, Smuggler Mountain in the east and Aspen Mountain in the south.

Aspen is also the starting point towards Maroon Bells, mountains the most photographed of North America.

After a treaty with the Ute Indians, the money was discovered by prospectors in 1879. The place was connected to the railroad the following year. At the end of the 19th century, the mines of Aspen were closed. The city was emptied gradually: one counted 705 residents in 1930.

The city is the theater of the film Dumb & Dumber, with Jim Carrey. An episode of South Park also carries the title of Aspen just as an institute, the Aspen Institute.

Popularity

Aspen is also famous for its sports d´hiver. If one s´élargit with Snowmass Village, the city counts 4 ski stations - Snowmass; Aspen Mountain; Aspen Highlands; Buttermilk - of which that of Snowmass (largest) accommodates each winter since 2002 the X Ranges, competition of sports d´hiver known as extremes (the contract signed between ESPN, chain of retransmission TV, and Aspen, will end in 2007). The American personalities, to see international, are numerous to have a property with Aspen where in its neighborhoods. But, for a few years, Aspen has been confronted with the competition of Vail, another ski station of the Colorado, whose popularity does not cease d´augmenter. L´afflux of rich and famous people involved the rise of the prices. Aspen, however small town, accommodate many stores of luxury. Beyond, flows of currency benefit the inhabitants and of many installations are done, for example, the college Aspen High School is provided with technological great ways.
