ReactOS is a project of Operating system under development wanting to be compatible with the pilot programs and Microsoft Windows.

DLL and the achievable ones of Windows can be interchanged.

ReactOS supports certain applications like AbiWord, Nero Burning Rom, Unreal Tournament or Mozilla Firefox. There exists a version LiveCD which makes it possible to test it without anything to install on the Hard drive.

History

In approximately 1996, a group of people formed a project named FreeWin95, with for goal to develop an operating system which would be a clone of Windows 95. The project stagnated in its discussions in connection with the systems design.

At the end of 1997, the project always did not give any result. The developers decided to make reappear the project, the project was famous ReactOS and its target became Windows NT. The project began in February 1998, with the development of the core and the basic pilots.

Functionalities

The core is now rather stable, of many API are ready for a work of higher level and a basic interface is available. ReactOS proposes ReactOS Explorer, a Shell basic for ReactOS, similar to the Explorateur Windows (Windows Explorer).

  • With its version 0.2, ReactOS is able to carry out many applications Win32, such as the scratch pads Notepad (basic text editor), Regedit (the editor of register), Cmd (the interpreter of order), and of many other applications (such as AbiWord) and of the video games (such as Quake and Quake II or Deus Ex and Unreal Tournament, and a clone of the Démineur conceived by WINE…).

  • With its version 0.2.5, the sound is operational with certain charts, and network codes it is supplemented. Screen printings of the navigator Lynx surfant on Internet were revealed. The support of the filing system Ext2, the support of Grub and NTLDR were also added, making it possible ReactOS respectively to coexist with the partitions of Linux and Windows.
  • version 0.3.0 (August 2006) brings mainly the support of the network, with various improvements and resolutions of bugs.
  • version 0.3.3 (September 2007) modifies considerably the stability of the operating system, which is now much surer.
A version LiveCD is available in remote loading to have an idea of this system without installing it.

Dependant projects

ReactOS works with the project WINE, the ReactOS project can thus profit from progress of Wine in the implementation of the API Win32. This work relates to mainly the software libraries, whose majority can be exchanged between ReactOS and Wine. The two projects work on cross-country race-compatibility, so that the little of remaining libraries can be employed in ReactOS.

Future

The developers of ReactOS work in particular on the support of USB (the implementation Cromwell de Linux is besides in the course of bearing), as well as the improvement of the management of DirectX and OpenGL.

The developers also work on an improvement of the graphical interface. The support of the platforms Java and Microsoft . Net via the development platform Mono is also under development.
