This demon received many names: Asmodée, Asmoth, Aschmédaï, Asmoday, Asmodeus, Aesma, Asmadai, Asmodius, Asmodaios, Hasmoday, Chashmodai, Azmonden, Sydonaï.
The name Asmodée would come from the deterioration of the name of a Persan spirit: " Aëschma-daëva" , which could also mean in Hebrew “that which makes perish”. It appears in the Livre of Tobie, III.8, driven out body of Sara by Saint Raphael. Translated into Latin by Asmodeus, his significance is “the burning breath of God”.
Sainte Francoise Romaine (1384-1440) reports, in chapter VI of its treaty on the hell, that Asmodée was in the sky chérubin before his revolt against God. It is today the impure spirit which governs all the sins of Luxure.
Superintendent of the Hells and the houses of play, Asmodée sows dissipation and terror. According to certain versions, it would be the snake which allured Eve. Azazel is also known according to others to be this snake.
It is also, according to the versions, one of the 4 or the 7 kings of the Enfer with Bael, Bélial, Byleth, Paymon, Pursan and Zapan. It is often represented like a demon with the wings of bat, looking at the interior of the houses by raising some the roof.
