Asmara
Asmara is the capital and more the big city of the Érythrée. Its population is of approximately: 500000 inhabitants. It is located by 15° 20 ' of Northern latitude and 38° 55 ' of longitude Is (15,333 NR, 38,91667 E). The Textile S, the dress S, the Shoe S, the Ceramic , the Meat, the Bière are the principal industrial products.
History
Asmara was formed starting from four villages at the 12th century like Relais. It became later the capital of the prince Ras Alula. It was colonized by the Italy in 1889 and became the national capital in 1897. Towards the end of the the Thirties, Italian deeply modified the city with a new scheduling and new buildings; Asmara was called " Piccola Roma" (small Rome). Nowadays, the majority of the buildings are of Italian origin and the stores always bear Italian names (for example " Bar Vittoria" , " Pasticceria moderna" , " LED formaggio" put; , " Ferramenta").During the War of Eritrean independence against the Ethiopia, the airport of Asmara played a central role in the conflict. The Ethiopian ones used it in order to receive weapons and supplies of their foreign supports. It was the last city to fall to the hands from the Liberation popular front from Érythrée. It was besieged in 1990 and fell without combat the May 24th 1991.
Curiosities
The city accommodates the National museum of Érythrée and is known for its buildings of the beginning of the 20th century, in particular the Cinéma Impero of style Art déco, the Pension Africa of style cubist, the orthodoxe eclectic cathedral, the opera, futuristic the building FIAT Tagliero , the néo-Romance catholic cathedral and the palate of the neo-classic Governor . One can also quote a room of bowling and a large market.Asmara has also a university and a fort of the 19th century. The city is served by the International airport of Asmara and is connected to the port of Massaua by the Eritrean railroad.
Asmara is also the seat of the archbishop's palace of the Eritrean orthodoxe Église which émancipa in 1993. The archbishop was high with the row of Patriarche of Érythrée in 1998, as well as the orthodoxe Ethiopian Église.
Asmara was proposed like possible addition with the Liste of the world heritage of UNESCO.
