Askja
The volcanic system of the Askja is located on the Highlands of Iceland. It is at a distance of 40 km of the oasis Herðubreiðarlindir and a little more far from the volcano Herðubreið. Askja belongs to the volcanic mountain of the Dyngjufjöll .
It consists of large a Caldeira (approximately 45 km ²) containing two lakes, of which Öskjuvatn, the deepest lake of Iceland (maximum depth of 224 m). It dates, as well as the smallest Víti crater, of an enormous eruption of the year 1875. The Pluie of ashes was so strong in the Fjords of the east, that the ground was poisoned, and much people had to emigrate.
During the year 1907, two German scientific explorers and, max Rudloff and Walter von Knebel, disappeared on the lake. Been engaged of Knebel, Ina von Grumbkov which was a very courageous woman undertook a forwarding to seek them. But one could discover no trace of them.
The last eruption, of effusive type, goes back to 1961
On the way towards Askja, one passes by the throat Drekagil , the throat of the dragons, which cuts stackings of Pillow washed (lava in cushion).
