Asian Confederation of football

The Asian Confédération of football ( Asian Football Confederation in English, AFC) is the international agency which gathers the national federations of Football countries of Asia. It organizes international competitions of football on the continent: Cut of Asia of the nations, qualification for the World cup, championship of football in room ( futsal ), League of the Champions of the AFC, etc

The AFC was founded the May 8th 1954 with Manila, in margin of the second Asian Jeux. The twelve founding members were: Afghanistan, Burma, China, HongKong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Filipino, Singapore and Vietnam. In 1956 takes place the first Coupe of Asia of the nations.

No member national team of the AFC gained a World cup. The first Asian team to take part in it was the the Indies Dutchwomen in 1938. The South Korea and the Japan organized jointly the World cup 2002, during which the South Korean team reached the semi-final, better result for an Asian team in this competition.

List members federations

Several federations represent nonindependent countries: HongKong and Macao is Chinese special autonomous regions, the Palestinian federation (on standby of an peace agreement with Israel). Under the name of Chinese Taipei , Taiwan takes part in the AFC in spite of the not-recognition of the country in the world.

Several federations of countries considered traditionally as Asian are members of the European Federation of football mainly for political reasons: Israel (member UEFA in 1994), Kazakhstan (2002), Turkey (1962).

Guam, island of the Peaceful , belongs to the Asian federation, although often considered in the Oceania.

The Australia left the Confédération océanienne to adhere to the Asian Confederation on January 1st 2006.
