  • Church of Asfeld
About the years 1680, Jean-Jacques de Mesmes, count d' Avaux, new main on the places, famous to have taken part in the signature of the treaty of Nimègue, decides to rebuild the church of Asfeld. The scholar, liking the voyages, particularly in Italy, fell in love with art Baroque, which will push it to wish the construction of a monument of this style and to entrust the realization of it to an architect known at the time to have solved engineering problems related to the rebuilding of the Royal Bridge in Paris: the Dominican brother François Romain. Thus, the count d' Avaux asks him it to take as a starting point this new art at the 17th century and to create a building having the shape of an musical instrument so that the songs and the prayers are still carried better towards the sky. It is this concept which leads the brother François Romain to establish his plans while taking as a starting point the viola da gamba.

The made brick church is designed in three parts: I° the peristyle, surrounded by an openwork colonnade, covered of an oblong roof; II° the bell-tower, decorated curved bays, surmounted of a pinnacle; III° the rotunda. The church counts 138 pillars and columns, has a 44,82 meters length, a circumference external of 145 meters. The church has an organ with 7 plays builds about 1900 by Clovis Renault. The painter Radislas Loukine made gift with the church of an icon representing Marie and the apostles Pierre and Paul.
