Asbestose

The terms asbestose , in European French, and asbestosis , in Canadian French, indicate a diffuse and progressive interstitial fibrosis which extends from the areas péribronchiolaires towards under-pleural spaces and which causes a sclerosis of the pulmonary fabric involving a chronic respiratory Insuffisance.

The affection, specific of the Asbestos, in general appears 10 to 20 years after the beginning of the exposure and seems to require important and durable exposures, whose minimal intensity is not well defined, the specialists not being always in agreement between them on this point.

The initial symptoms of the asbestose are hardly significant and develop gradually, in particular a progressive Dyspnée, initially limited to the effort, sometimes accompanied by a Toux. With time, the pulmonary capacity and the broadcasting capacity of the carbon monoxide are reduced.

The asbestose can be associated with other diseases: benign bronchopulmonary attacks such as chronic bronchitides, immunological disorders, even a cardiac failure. There does not exist treatment likely to make regress the process.
