Fred Zinnemann, the realizer of the Train will whistle three times here ( High Noon , 1952) sign a rough and direct film in the form of indictment against brutal manners and the moral dilapidation of the military institutions. Bathing in a climate of moral perplexity worthy of a “black film”, the setting in scene of Fred Zinnemann, solid and neat, are based on the effectiveness of the scenario of Daniel Taradash (drawn from the novel éponyme of James Jones, published in 1952), on the greyness matt of its black and white and on a distribution of actors and actresses rich person and judicious.

This novel is one of rare on the life with Pearl Harbor at the beginning of the Années 1940, with its garrisons and its brothels.

Comment

  • Prospects sociological and psychological

An amplified concentrate of the civil society, the military life is a refuge for some and an social elevator for others. Space closed with its own rules and its own justice of the martial law and the martial court, the military life is also the processing site and oppression by the hyper-structuring of any activity in the ideology of the maintenance of the law and the order.

For the ones, the military life is the family life and the physical, psychic and social structure that they did not have. For the others, the military life is the path towards a honourable social status.

Justice was returned finally by the judgment of the Holmes captain, not for abuse of power, but to have failed in the first duty of any officer who is to take care of the comfort and the safety of his men. Refusing boxer to defend the colors of its regiment, the soldier Robert Lee Prewitt (Montgomery Clift), boxer and first bugle, is exposed to all the brimades, under the obliging eye of an inefficient captain, Dana Holmes (Philip Ober), which aspires to its own promotion by intrigues of living room and the victory of its team to the regimental championship of boxing.

The sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster), man right, qualified and devoted to his men, lover of Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr), the wife of the Holmes captain, admires without including/understanding it the obstinacy of Prewitt. The old average weight also attracts itself the sympathy of Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra), soldier grouser, insubordinate and related to drink. Interned in disciplinary camp to have protested against the mockeries and harassings of the sergeant “Fatso (fatty double)” James Judson (Ernest Borgnine), Maggio ends up dying of brutalities which its geôlier inflicts to him, same Judson.

Decided to avenge his/her friend, Prewitt stabs Judson during a duel in the back-yard of a bar with soldier. Seriously wounded, it deserted and takes refuge at Lorene (Dona Reed), its mistress. Whereas Japanese aviation attacks Pearl Harbor, Prewitt tries clandestinely to join its unit to fight among his/her comrades of fortune and misfortune, but it is cut down, by error, like a vulgar spy, in total confusion after the air and sea raid.

Mythical film by some séquentes strong, as the languorous kiss that Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr exchange on the beach during their bath of midnight which in made fantasmer more one, the solo of trumpet on “the Re-enlisted man” air and ringing with died of Robert Lee Prowitt for his Maggio buddy.

By telling the destinies intersected of some soldiers on a military base with Honolulu the day before the Japanese bombardment of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Fred Zinnemann - the Train will whistle three times (High Noon) , Chacal (The Day off the Jackal) , a man for eternity (Man for All Seasons has) - carries the largest artistic and commercial success of his career.

Wrongfully taxed with “ragout humanistic” or stigmatized for the classicism with its setting in scene, As long as there will be men formed well part of the legend of the Hollywood cinema. In addition to the scene of the kiss, the solo of trumpet in the nightclub, bombardment of Pearl Harbor, the absurd destiny of the character interpreted by Montgomery Clift, or the poignant epilog on the boat, remain engraved in all the memories. Been used by a setting in scene without fault as Fred Zinnemann, As long as there will be men is also the happy result of an astute distribution with against-employment of actors and actresses.

Frank Sinatra perhaps never was also upsetting, Ernest Borgnine so animal, Burt Lancaster also “glamor”, Deborah Kerr so desirable and Montgomery Clift also tormented. The film gained eight Oscars in 1953 of which those of best film, better realizer, best supporting roles with Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed.
