Arudy
Arudy is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine. It is one of both Chef-lieu of canton of the Vallée of Ossau.
Its inhabitants is Arudyens.
Geography
Located in Valley of Ossau, Arudy is built in a Coude Gave d' Ossau, in the west of a circus created with the Quaternaire by the Glacier S.

The brook of Laguns, flow of the brook Ourtau, itself flow of the Gave d' Aspe (which joined the Gave d' Ossau with Oloron-Holy-Marie, thus forming the Gave d' Oloron) also sprinkles the territory of the commune.

Toponymy
The toponym Arudy appears in the forms Eruri (1270, titles of the Vallée of Ossau), Aruri (1343, notaries of Pardies), Erudi (1487, notaries of Ossau), Arudi (1538, reformation of Béarn), Saint-Germain d' Arudy (1607, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).It comes from the Basque harr = rock and uri = city.
History
The first traces of civilization date from the Préhistoire, more precisely of the Magdalénien. The excavations in four caves located on the territory of the commune (Maladore, Poeymaü, Saint-Michel, Espalungue) made it possible to discover bones, tools and of many shells of Escargot S.
The village of Eruri, or Aruri, is mentioned as from the 13th century. It is as from this time that the trade union of Ossau is created, which will allow a relative independence of the communes of the valley until the révolution.

In 1385, Arudy counted 86 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Ossau.

Arudy has varied an enough economic activity, mainly turned towards the breeding (it has an important center of breeding of sheep), but it also preserved an activity of marble extraction (gray-black) and of limestone, always in activity. Other industries concerning wood, the shaping of the marble and a foundry are present on the commune.
