Arturo Uslar Pietri

Arturo Uslar Pietri (May 16th 1906 - February 26th 2001) is a writer and intellectual Venezuelan among most eminent of the 20th century.

Born with Caracas, it very early publishes news in magazines for youth and undertakes studies in political sciences before becoming with the beginning of the year 1930 member of the diplomatic delegation of the Venezuela in Paris where it binds with other futures South American great writers like Alejo Carpentier or Miguel Angel Asturias. He writes during his stay in Paris a historical novel on the war of liberation of Simon Bolivar entitled the lanzas coloradas , published in Spanish in 1931 (in French in 1932).

Returned in its country, he undertakes, as from 1935, a political career by publishing tests on the use of the incomes of oil and on education. He will be appointed senator, minister and even candidate with the presidency of the Republic in 1963.

He will ensure a long time the direction of the newspaper El Nacional before becoming ambassador close to UNESCO to Paris. Its romantic tests, poems and fictions which will be worth many rewards to him, like the prices Prince of Asturies and Miguel Cervantès in Spain or the price Maria Moors Cabot in the United States.

Its works were translated little into French, and one must with the editions " Critérion" recent publication of some of its larger texts: Insurgent and Visionaries of the Latin America in 1995, winners and other news in 1995, the way of Eldorado in 1997 (work evokes equipped with the conquistador Lope de Aguirre which carried to the cinema Werner Herzog in 1972 with Klaus Kinski). The editions " The vent" passes; will publish in 1986 a collection of poems the Man who I become .

He would have been hundred years old in 2006.

Its close relations took part in the homage of the centenary of Arturo Uslar Pietri to the Cervantes institute of Paris. Among them, one counted Claude Errecart, Astrid Avendano, François Delprat, Philippe Dessomes Flores and Gustavo Guerrero.
