Arts center Tjibaou

The arts center Tjibaou is a public edifice intended to promote the culture Kanak, located between bays of Tina and Magenta, on a peninsula in periphery of Noumea, in New Caledonia.

Envisaged in the agreements of Matignon of 1988, this center of the culture kanak was built between 1995 and 1998 by the architect Renzo Piano, within the framework of Great Work of the Republic. Inaugurated May 4th and 5th 1998, the building will have cost 320 French franc million (value 1991). Its name was allotted to him in homage to the independence leader kanak Jean-Marie Tjibaou, at the origin of this project, was died in 1989.

The exact official name of the center is Arts center Tjibaou and not Arts center kanak Jean-Marie Tjibaou nor Arts center Jean-Marie Tjibaou , this point was the subject besides of an explanation by the usual chiefs during the inauguration of the center in May 1998, to also see the official site of the CCT to be convinced some.

The CCT is managed by the Development agency of the culture kanak (ADCK).

The arts center Tjibaou is:

Structure

Its architectural party is a modern and monumental translation of the vernacular Architecture of the island. The center consists of ten high ribbed and frayed similar buildings of wood as well as more traditional building. It extends on. The architect is Renzo Piano also architect of the Center Georges-Pompidou and Prix Pritzker 1998. The starting project was conceived by Renzo Piano in dialog with the local communities of which the widow of Jean-Marie Tjibaou.

A study out of blower, with measurement of the local pressures, was realizes with CSTB of Nantes on a plexiglass model to the 1/100.
