Artima

Artima is a publisher of cartoons based with Tourcoing in the Fifties and Sixties. Its name means Artisans in imagery .

This publisher had the idea to publish monthly booklets cartoons in a new format 17,5 X 23 cm, known as " with the française" (only some titles like Big Servant boy or Foxie had a smaller format pocket). The covers, very accrocheuses, were colors, the interior in black and white. Each title targeted a particular kind:

War, action and ventures: Audax, Ardan, Tarou, Adventures Film, Vigor, Dynamic, Tempest, Hurricane, Red Canyon, Fulgor, Avenger, Olympic, Hardy, Mystic, Flash, Bold, Shock, Commando .
Science fiction and fantastic: Meteor (series drawn by Raoul Giordan), Cosmos (Ray Makes), Sidéral, Aventures fiction, Sputnik, Atome Kid, Monde Future, Big servant boy become Big boss . These magazines introduirent in France part of the cd. Comics of which the Franc-Archers (Green Arrow), the hunter of men of Mars , Adam Strange , the taxi driver of space , the museum of space and the Ranger space .
poetic Humor: Panda , series whose draftsman and originator were Dutch Marten Toonder, Foxie (short irresistible animalist fables of cd. Comics ).

The draftsmen were French (Bob daN, Roger Melliès, Rallic, Bob Leguay, Eugene Gire, Gervy, Bild, Brantonne, Raoul and Robert Giordan, Pierre Goff, Raymond Cazanave, J.P. Decoudun, Gaston Niezab, André Gosselin, Erik,…), Spanish (Fernando Fernández, who was only 16 years old in 1956, for Ray Comet and Mr. TV , Bayo for Atome Kid , Francisco Hidalgo, which will take later the pseudonym of Yves Roy, for Angel Audaz , Boixcar, Jaime Rumeu,…), English (Graham Cotton for the Rollinson family in space ), Dutch (Henk Sprenger for Pilot Storm and Kick Wilstra , Marten Toonder), and American (Joe Kubert, Dyes with carmine Infantino, Nick Cardy, Murphy Anderson,…).

In 1962, Artima was repurchased by the Presses of the City which re-elected it - a name already used in 1956 during the launching of Foxie and Big Boy in small size, but which was not used any more after 4 or 5 numbers. The mention of the new owner will appear on the covers only in March 1963 and it will be necessary to wait the month of May 1965 so that the name Arédit is indicated. Gradually, the translations of comics cd. then Marvel took the step on European creations.
