Artificial island
A artificial island is a island made thanks to a human intervention, and not of natural way. It is generally built on a existing Récif, or can be the extension of a existing small island. The artificial islands are traditionally created by fill. Some recent examples follow the model of the oil platforms, but the designation of “island” for these structures remains subjected to controversy. A form less discussed of artificial island consists of the ground insulation by the digging of a channel.
History
Although having a modern image, one discovered several types of very old artificial islands like the Crannog S prehistoric of Scotland and Ireland, the centers cérémonials Nan Madol of Micronesia and the islands Uros of the lake Titicaca.The old Aztec city of Tenochtitlán, today Mexico City, was located on a natural small island in the Lac Texcoco and surrounded by artificial islands called Chinampa S used for the culture.
