Article 58 of the penal code of the RSFSR

The article 58 of the penal code of the RSFSR (Soviet federative socialist Republic of Russia) was founded on February 25th, 1927 to stop the people suspected of activities Contre-révolutionnaires. It was re-examined several times and was significantly extended on June 8th, 1934.

This article introduced into the criminal Law of the RSFS of Russia concepts of “enemies of the people”, “traitors” and “saboteurs”. It led to the imprisonment of a great number of people, of which a multitude the innocent ones. The sorrows could go up to 25 years of imprisonment and were frequently extended for one undetermined period, without lawsuit nor deliberation.

The penal codes of the others Soviet republics also comprised articles of comparable nature.

After the denunciation of the Stalinism by Nikita Khrouchtchev, the code was largely rewritten.
