Arthur Neville Chamberlain (March 18th 1869 - November 9th 1940) was a British politician, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the May 28th 1937 with the May 10th 1940.

Oldest son of Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State to the colonies and cantor of L 'imperialism British of the end of the 19th century, it began in policy while becoming, as his/her father had been it, mayor of Birmingham in 1915 after a beginning successful in the businesses. He is elected appointed preserving in 1918 then Chancellor of the Exchequer to two resumption in 1923/1924, then of 1931 with 1937.

Its policy supports, not without social difficulties, the recovery of the British economy after the crisis of 1929/1931.

In 1937, it succeeded Stanley Baldwin like Prime Minister and as preserving leader of the S. It disputed the preserving term of however , preferring to employ that of trade unionist .

However, its name remains attached to the policy of appeasing which it carries out as a Prime Minister, starting from 1937, with the Germany. It yields thus to all the requirements of Hitler on the Sudètes at the time of the conference which led to the Accords of Munich in September 1938. The annexation of the Czechoslovakia in March 1939 opens the eyes to him and, the March 31st 1939, the the United Kingdom guarantees officially the independence of the Poland. Its partisans affirm that the time obtained gave to the United Kingdom time to prepare the war. Its adversaries reproach him on the contrary its weakness vis-a-vis Hitler, stressing that it was already weakened by the cancer which carried it afterwards two years.

The September 3rd 1939, the United Kingdom enters in war against Germany. It will be disputed after the rout of British forwarding towards the Norway in April 1940.

In May 1940, following health issues and conscious that it is not that which incarnates best the spirit of resistance to Germany, Chamberlain resigns of its post of Prime Minister to the profit of Winston Churchill. He dies shortly after.

Arthur Neville Chamberlain became honorary member of the Royal Society the June 16th 1938.
