Arthur Maury

Arthur Maury , (July 31st 1844 - February 1st 1907) is large a philatelist French, author of several works of reference in this discipline.

It was interested in philately since its childhood, but only to furnish its leisures. Then, after having begun a career of Glove ier, he chose a philatelic profession, as of 1863, after having read the first catalog of postage stamps of Alfred Potiquet published a little earlier.

Not being satisfied to practice the trade, Maury published, as of 1864, a very documented review, the Collector of postage stamps . It associated with it in its comments, the stamps with the sudden starts of the history, which it knew well to be plunged there as an autodidact, and of the policy, which was according to him the history being done. He also encouraged in his review, the collection incipient from the Oblitération S, and in particular from those of the Franco-German Guerre of 1870. He is thus one of the first philatelists to have exceeded the stage of the simple collection of images. He in addition supported the choice of the word “philately” to indicate this passion, against the désigntion of " Timbrologie" recommended by Doctor Jacques Legrand.

It finally launched its own catalog which was republished unceasingly, initially by itself, then by its successors, until 1980. The day before its death, it was pleased to see appearing, in 1907, its rough work of 648 pages: the History of the French postage stamps , which still makes authority.

He was also member of the French company of founded timbrology in 1875 by Jacques Legrand.
