Arthur Masson (Rièzes-lez-Chimay 1896 - Namur 1970)

Doctor in Philosophy and letters, Belgian writer which wanted to be the cantor of the Wallonia.

---- Arthur Masson makes its secondary studies with Chimay, and academics with the catholic Université of Leuwen (Leuven in Flanders, before the scission of the university). He teaches then with the Athenaeum of Bubbles.

Being discovered a vocation of novelist, it creates in 1938 the character of Toine Culot which makes it famous. He writes about thirty novels (and some plays), where the dialect Wallon is delicately inserted. He expresses there agitation, friendship and richness of the heart. Cantor of the country mosan, it described the life of the people of modest means and the villages, with Humor, but depth too. So it was compared in particular with Daudet or Marcel Pagnol.

The five novels putting in scene its character of Toine Culot form an indicated cycle of the term of " Toinade". This series diverted a generation of Walloons during the second world war. Toine in the storm , published in 1946, provides a testimony surprising over the years of occupation Nazi.

Arthur Masson also wrote a work of study of the vocabulary of the French language: to enrich its vocabulary , published in 1949 by the Editions Baude, in the collection to write and well speak Well.

With smoothness, Arthur Masson east is depicted itself in these terms: “An unspecified Mister. Standard article. Neither reserved, neither condemned, neither ascetic, nor Don Juan. Neither agitated, nor deadened. Work hard. Rests in time. Like its country and the simple good people all which populate it. ”

► Around the author and of his characters, a space was created in its honor with Treignes (the “Trignolles” of its novels - commune of Viroinval), Space Arthur Masson, as well as a museum; and around a fountain, three bronze sculptures of the Belgian artist Claude Rahir, evoke three of the characters of the Toinade : Toine Base, Hilde its wife, and the cousin T.
