Arthur Giovonni

Arthur Giovonni (Corsica Moca-Croce, , October 6th, 1909 - Paris, January 19th, 1996) is a Résistant communist Corsican.

After its participation in the Countryside of France in 1939 - 40, it is demobilized in July 1940. It is then named professor with Bastia. Transferred to Rodez because of its political past, it maintains there a clandestine activity against the Vichy government. It joined Corsica during the summer 1942 and enters clandestinity. It contributes to the creation of the resistance movement Front National with Henri Maillot, whereas Corsica is occupied by the Italy NS starting from November 11th, 1942.

In April 1943, it contacts Paulin Colonna of Istria, charged to unify the resistance movements in Corsica.

September 8th, 1943, the insurrection is started in Corsica whereas Giovonni is with Algiers. It joined the island on September 14th, 1943 with new the prefect of Corsica, Charles Luizet.

After the war, he is mayor of Ajaccio, then appointed of Ajaccio to Constituent then to the National Assembly (1945 - 1956). He is member of the Central committee of the French Communist party until 1961, date from which he takes again a post of professor in Paris.

Its ashes rest with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise.
